Abstract
The objective of this work was to study the way of faith and devotion of parishioners in the
municipality of Santa Luzia, State of Paraíba. The interest in approaching the subject was linked to
the fact of understanding the remaining facts of the religiosity, as well as informing the new
generations of the genesis of Catholicism in Santa Luzia. Bibliographic and documentary research
of the works of those who have already written about this aspect that leads to the culture of a land
that is characterized as religious. Parish laws, books and documents. In order to expand and populate
the interior of Paraíba, Portuguese Captain Geraldo Ferreira das Neves bought land in this region
and in one thousand eight hundred and fifty-six he donated a land where a Chapel was built, which
later became consolidated as Parish by virtue of Provincial law number fourteen. From a small farm
to a village and then to a city under the aforementioned Law, the Parish had a considerable number
of Fathers, including children of the land, who created many brotherhoods and contributed to the
development of the municipality through their teachings. A Saint with the name of “Santa Luzia” was
chosen as patron saint, who until today has been recognized by the faithful all over the world.
