Abstract

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), as well as hypothyroidism, are among the most common endocrine disorders in women of reproductive age worldwide. PCOS has a great impact on the well-being and quality of life of patients. It is known that pathologies that cause thyroid disease, such as hyper- and hypothyroidism, may also present symptomatology common to PCOS. In patients with hypothyroidism, similarities were found regarding the pathophysiology of PCOS, such as the presence of lower levels of SHBG, estradiol, testosterone and androstenedione. In this way, it can cause menstrual and ovulatory disorders. A cohort study found that nearly 5% of women between the ages of 16 and 41 with a history of miscarriages or subfertility had some type of abnormality in thyroid function. In women already diagnosed with PCOS, subclinical hypothyroidism has been reported with an estimated prevalence of approximately 10% to 25%, which could progress to clinical hypothyroidism. Recent studies have shown that patients with PCOS have a 2.5x greater risk of developing thyroid disease, as well as a 3x greater prevalence of autoimmune thyroid disease. Several hypotheses of the pathophysiology involved have been proposed. Although the relationship between PCOS and hypothyroidism is not fully understood, it is certain that these two pathologies are closely associated, research indicates that there is an even greater risk of prevalence of complications and comorbidities such as diabetes, dyslipidemia and cardiovascular diseases in patients with both pathologies. A combination of HT and PCOS may be associated with more pronounced metabolic changes than those of pediatric pathologies, an integrative literature review will be carried out.
