Abstract

INTRODUCTION: Sexual health and sexuality in elderly women should be seen in its broadest sense, envisioning the elderly in an integral and attentive way. The high number of elderly women brings with it the challenge of linking the concepts of development and aging that are considered, according to the culture, as divergent. Considering the particularities of aging and understanding that biological decline results from this process is fundamental to seeing physical and emotional changes in a more humane way, among such changes, sexuality, which is little debated and full of socially arranged taboos. OBJECTIVE: To discuss female sexuality in old age from physiological, psychological and sociocultural aspects. METHOD: This is a literature review based on studies published on the subject in a broad way. Inclusion criteria will be based on studies where the highlights are the factors that influence, directly and indirectly, the sexual life of women in old age. The exclusion criterion will be based on incomplete and duplicate articles. CONCLUSION: The view of the elderly about sexuality, especially among women, needs to undergo significant changes so that there is greater communication between society and women in old age, as well as these women and health professionals.
