Abstract

Introduction: Poland syndrome is a rare congenital anomaly, characterized by the absence of the sternostal portion of the pectoralis major muscle. Various degrees of muscle and bone involvement may be present in the syndrome, such as hypoplasia of the pectoralis minor muscles, external oblique, serratus, deltoid and latissimus dorsi. Abnormalities that include breast hypoplasia, subcutaneous fat and skin attachments can be found. According to the anomalies found, it is classified as mild, moderate and severe. Objective: To describe, from the literature, the anatomy of the region affected by Poland syndrome, correlating with the most used surgical techniques for correction. Methodology: This study is an integrative review. At first, the research is oriented with the following guiding question: which anatomical structures affected in Poland Syndrome and the surgical techniques available for correction? The bibliographic research was carried out between January and June 2022 and the following online databases were consulted: Virtual Health Library Portal (VHL), PubMed, SciELO and Medline. The descriptors in Health Science (DeCS) used were: 'Anatomy'; 'Surgery'; ''Syndrome of Poland. '. A formula was created using the 'AND' connective and used in the search using all previously selected descriptors. Fifteen articles were selected at the end of the research. Results: Poland syndrome illustrates the importance of continuous research and the development of customized approaches to treat rare medical conditions. In this sense, through in-depth knowledge of the anatomy of the chest wall, clinical characteristics and surgical techniques available, health professionals can offer affected patients a better quality of life and satisfactory aesthetic results.
