Abstract

Insects of the genus Caligo attack Arecaceae, Poaceae, Musaceae and Heliconiaceae plants. Caligo illioneus has five subspecies distributed in Neotropical region, among which is Caligo illioneus illioneus (Cramer, 1775) (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae), whose main damage is defoliation by caterpillars. In order to develop a method of behavioral control, volatiles released by males and females of Caligo illioneus were studied, aiming at study its chemical composition. Caterpillars and eggs were collected in the municipality of Tailandia, Pará, Brazil and sent to the Laboratory of Natural Resources Research of the Federal University of Alagoas, in Maceió, Alagoas, Brazil, where they were fed with coconut leaflets until adults emergence. To obtain the extracts, adult insects (24 hours old) were anesthetized in low temperature (0oC) at twilight time. Posterior wings from 10 males and 10 females were excised. Compounds were extracted with HPLC hexane for 20 minutes and stored in freezer (-18oC). The chemical composition of the extracts was verified by gas chromatography coupled to the flame ionization detector (GC-FID) and gas chromatography coupled to the mass spectrum (GC-MS). The chemical identification of the chromatographic profile from the extracts occurred through the Kovats index (KI). These KI values were compared with databases on the NIST and Pherobase sites, as well as individual analyzes of mass spectra. The information obtained suggests, for both samples analyzed, a profile of compounds ranging from saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbons, alcohols, to aldehydes, among others. Such data contribute to the knowledge of the chemical ecology of the species, being important recognizing distinct chemical signals.
