Abstract

Excess salts in irrigation water cause significant losses in agriculture. However, silicon supplementation in plants appears as a viable alternative to reduce this problem. This work was conducted with the objective of evaluating the growth rates in yellow passion fruit seedlings under saline irrigation and forms of silicon application. The following treatments were evaluated: T1 - irrigation with water with an electrical conductivity (EC) of 1.2 dS m-1; T2 - irrigation with EC water of 4.0 dS m-1 (salinized); T3 - irrigation with saline water, with application of silicon to the soil; T4 - irrigation with saline water, with silicon application via foliar; and T5 - irrigation with saline water, with silicon application via soil and foliar. An experiment was conducted in a greenhouse, using a completely randomized design, with five replications. The data obtained were subjected to analysis of variance and the means of the treatments were compared using the Tukey test. It was found that salinity reduced the absolute and relative growth rates of plants. However, all forms of silicon application evaluated mitigated the negative effects of salts, with emphasis on the combination of soil and foliar application.
