Abstract

Tephritid flies are leading pests in fruit crops. Its natural enemy, Diachasmimorpha longicaudata (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), often parasite larvae within a range of fruit hosts and these preferences may be influenced by innate behavior or previous experience. Studies have attempted to understand how previous experience influences D. longicaudata learning behavior and memory. We evaluate the influence of prior exposure to artificial substrate made of distilled water and agar (control), distilled water and red guava (Psidium guajava) pulp, var. Paluma or distilled water and apple steel (Malus domestica) pulp, var. Red delicious on D. longicaudata learning and memory. Three-day-old D. longicaudata females were exposed (24, 48 or 72 hours) to each of the artificial substrates. Memory was evaluated at intervals of 1, 12, 24 and 48 hours after conditioning. Females were submitted to a double choice olfactometer to odors of infested guava vs. infested apple. Females experiencied in the control substrate showed no preference between fruits. Diachasmimorpha longicaudata submitted to guava substrate for 24-hour, modified their response, being more attracted to infested guava volatiles for up to 24 hours. Regarding to the apple pulp, D. longicaudata was attracted to this substrate, for up to 12 hours, only with 48-hour experience. We concluded that D. longicaudata females have learning and memory plasticity associated to type and stimulus duration.
