Abstract

Propolis is a product known and used by humans since the dawn of civilization, as a medicinal substance or as an integral part of ointments and embalming creams and to treat infections. The applicability of propolis in dentistry is present in mouthwashes and toothpastes, used in the prevention of caries and in the treatment of gingivitis and stomatitis. In addition to being part of experiments in the area of endodontics, cariology, oral surgery, periodontics and oral pathology. The study aimed to develop an integrative review about the use of propolis in Dentistry and its clinical applicability. According to the methods used, the research is an integrative review, carried out in the databases indexed in the Virtual Health Library (VHL) through the Latin American and Caribbean Literature on Health Sciences (LILACS), of the Online Medical Literature Search and Analysis (MEDLINE), the Brazilian Dental Library (BBO) and the MOSAICO - Integrative Health. To carry out the research, the descriptors were crossed: Propolis. Dentistry. Treatment. The guiding question was: How is the use of propolis in Dentistry performed and its clinical applicability? Inclusion and exclusion criteria were applied to cross the descriptors in the VHL, based on the following criteria: full articles available in full, monographs, dissertations and theses; published in the period of the last 10 years, that is, between the years 2012 and 2022; that were available in Portuguese and English; in addition to those that presented a relevant discussion on the subject and had free access. The results obtained from the analysis of articles after crossing the descriptors in the Virtual Health Library (BVS) initially pointed to 18 works, from which 07 searches were extracted from the following databases: Brazilian Dental Library (BBO - Dentistry), LILACS, MOSAIC - Integrative Health and MEDLINE. It is concluded that the study demonstrates how propolis can be used and how Brazil can gain more and more prominence regarding its use for dental purposes, aiming at a natural product, of quality, good acceptance and that is an accessible way of dental treatment to the Brazilian population.
