Abstract

The Plutella xylostella is a pest that attacks the planting of vegetables such as lettuce, cabbage and leaf cabbage, causing loss to farmers. The control of this pest is mainly performed with the application of commercial insecticides based on pyrethroids and organochlorines, reported to have high toxicity to the environment. An alternative to the use of these insecticides is the use of essential oils (EOs) obtained from plants, such as Piper species, reported to have high EO production and to reveal a range of biological properties, such as: antimicrobial, larvicide, acaricide and insecticide. Among the species of Piper genus, P. marginatum, commonly found in Atlantic Forest edges in Pernambuco-Brazil, appears as a candidate for use as a natural insecticide on P. xylostella. The EO was obtained of the leaves from P. marginatum collected at the Federal Rural University of Pernambuco by hydrodistillation. GC-MS analysis of the EO from leaves of P. marginatum revealed as major constituents, the phenylpropanoides (Z)-asarone (20.91%), dilapiol (15.78%) and (E)-asarone (15.46%). The evaluation of P. marginatum EO insecticide potential against P. xylostella was performed by residual contact and feeding deterrence bioassays. In the residual contact bioassay, the EO revealed a mean lethal concentration (LC50) of the 0.3 µL/mL, the EO was about 16 times more toxic to P. xylostella than the Azamax used as positive control (LC50 = 4 9 µL/mL). EO was also repellent to P. xylostella, after periods of 24h, at concentrations above 0.01 µL/mL. These results show that P. marginatum oil has shown as a promising candidate for use in P. xylostella control.
