Abstract

The literature shows hepatic pathologies caused by infectious agents, especially viral infections, drugs, toxins, and metabolic diseases. Some markers of liver damage are used and have shown great efficacy in the diagnosis of pathological conditions of the liver. Among the main markers of liver damage are the enzymes Alanine aminotransferase (ALT), Aspartate aminotransferase (AST), Gamma Glutamyl Transferase (GGT) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP). Royal jelly (GR) has a wide range of pharmacological applications, including use as an immunostimulant, a potent antioxidant, and a hepatoprotective agent. In this context, this study aimed to review the scientific literature about evidence of the potential of royal jelly as hepatoprotective in liver injury models measured by enzymatic markers. In this study, a systematic literature review was carried out with search for articles in the Science Direct and Pubmed / Medline (Medical Literature Analysis and Retrievel System Online) databases, using the keywords Royal Jelly, Injury Markers and Hepatoprotector translated into English (Royal jelly, injury markers and Hepatoprotective). The search and selection of studies according to the established criteria resulted in the choice of 3 scientific articles. Despite the small number of studies on the assessment of the biological potential of royal jelly on clinical conditions involving liver tissue injury and injury, the results reported here together with the literature discussed, demonstrated that royal jelly can be a promising therapeutic agent with hepatoprotective functionality in different circumstances, being demonstrated by the reduction and / or attenuation of biochemical markers used as a reference for diagnosis of liver injuries.
