Abstract

The forest sector occupies a prominent place amongst economic segments established in Brazil, with the Eucalyptus spp. crop being a symbol of the Brazilian forest business today. With the eucalyptus farming consolidation in the country, this exotic species of the Myrtaceae family has been suffering attacks from insects that migrate from native hosts of the Brazilian flora. Among them is the brown caterpillar, Thyrinteina arnobia (Stoll, 1782) (Lepidoptera: Geometridae). The objective of this research was study, isolate and identify the possible chemical compounds in hairpencils of the male T. arnobia moths, collected from eucalyptus forest stands in the state of Alagoas in order to provide basis for the implementation of an Integrated Forest Pest Management program. The research was conducted at the Agricultural and Forest Entomology Laboratory (LEAF) and the Research Laboratory in Natural Resources (LPqRN) of the Federal University of Alagoas (UFAL). Pupae coming from rearing stock were sexed, separated and transported to a laboratory with inverted photoperiod. Adult males aged 24-48 hours were placed for hairpencil extraction. The extracts obtained were filtered and analyzed by gas chromatography with flame ionization detector (GC-FID), in which the peaks were observed and compared with C13 and C7-C30 alkane standards. With this comparison, it was possible to calculate the respective Kovats Indexes (KIs) and identify, through Pherobase, the possible compounds of T. arnobia hairpencils. A total of 86 peaks were observed. With further confirmation of these compounds trough gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC-MS), their use in base studies for programs in monitoring and control of this pest may become of great importance.
