Abstract

Essential oils are products generated by secondary metabolism of plants. These complex mixtures of natural chemical substances can have a repellent effect and/or mortality in aphids-pest; being an alternative to the use of synthetic pesticides. The objective of this study aimed to evaluate the effect of the essential oils of citronela (Cymbopogon winterianus); brazilian pepper (Schinus terebinthifolius) and eucalyptus (Eucalyptus citriodora) in the preference of appterous females of Brevicoryne brassicae L. in laboratory. Tests with chance of choice were performed using green cabbage leaf discs Brassica oleracea var. acephala of 3 cm Ø; dipped in aqueous solutions containing one of the essential oils (0.5%) or distilled water (control). In all treatments; Tween® 80 was added to 1%. The bioassay was maintained in a climatized room (25 ± 2 °C; 60 ± 10% RH; 14 hours photoperiod). The treatments were compared two to two (leaf disc with one of the oils vs. control) arranged equidistant in Petri dish with 6 mL water-agar. Ten repetitions were made per contrast; where 10 adult insects (1;5 - 2 mm) were released at the center of each plate. After 1; 3; 6; and 24 hours; the aphid responses were compared by the Chi-square test ( = 0.05). A smaller number of aphids was observed in the discs containing the oils; 24 hours after the application; in relation to the control treatment (p < 0.05). The results showed that C. winterianus; S. terebinthifolius and E. citriodora have a repellent effect on the orientation of the aphids when applied to green cabbage leaf discs; indicating a potential use of this tool in the management of this herbivore in the field.
