Abstract
Collagen-based supplements have been recommended for preventing skin aging and maintain joint health. Taking into account the large offer of these products on the market, the work aimed to determine the collagen protein and vitamin C concentration, and to evaluate the labeling in 16 commercial samples of collagen-based products enriched with vitamin C, collected by the Health Surveillance of the State of São Paulo. The vitamin C content was determined by iodometric titration; collagen proteins were calculated based on the hydroxyproline content using conversion factor 8, and the labeling analysis was carried out in accordance with Brazilian legislation. ANVISA RDC Resolution nº 360/2003 admits a tolerance of 20% with respect to the values of nutrients declared on the label. Considering this tolerance, all samples showed concentrations of vitamin C and collagen proteins according to the value stated on the label. Regarding the label, all samples presented from one to four information in disagreement with the legislation. The main non-compliance was in relation to the use of images or unauthorized expressions that may mislead the consumer. The consumption of hydrolyzed collagen by the population has been increasing due to the evidence of its health benefits. Therefore, continuous monitoring is necessary to ensure that the population consumes products with reliable information, and with nutrient content compatible with the values declared on the label.
