Endodontics is the dental specialty most associated with postoperative pain. The symptomatology may occur between sessions or even after the endodontic treatment is finished, due to acute inflammation of the periradicular tissue or due to instrumentation beyond the apex. However, several internal and external factors may be related to pain after treatment. Thus, the present study aims to identify which are the main factors that may trigger painful sensitivity after endodontic treatment, through integrative literature review. The following databases were used: SciELO (Scientific Electronic Library Online), ScienceDirect and PubMed/MEDLINE (US National Library of Medicine/ Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online) to select scientific articles. The study considered articles published in English in the last 10 years (2013-2023). Nine articles were selected. These papers showed that patients presenting with preoperative pain are prone to develop pain after treatment is completed and that prior use of medications can reduce the incidence of these painful events. The articles studied present disagreements about the influence of the state of pulp vitality on postoperative pain, as well as the technique used in the treatment.
