Strategies for preventing post-whitening sensitivity: a comprehensive analysis

Abstract

Dental bleaching is a widely sought-after cosmetic procedure in modern dentistry, but post-whitening tooth sensitivity is a common complication that can significantly affect patients' quality of life. this study investigates the causes and impacts of post-whitening tooth sensitivity, as well as strategies for prevention and treatment, aiming to contribute to the development of effective clinical protocols. an integrative literature review was conducted using databases such as medline, scopus, pubmed, and scielo. scientific articles in portuguese, english, and spanish addressing the proposed topic were included. articles were selected based on inclusion and exclusion criteria, totaling six for analysis. the studies reviewed showed that both in-office and at-home whitening procedures can cause tooth sensitivity, influenced by factors such as the concentration of the whitening agent, application technique, and individual patient conditions. preventive strategies, such as detailed patient history-taking and the use of desensitizing gels, were effective in reducing sensitivity. additionally, proper management of gingival inflammation associated with whitening products emerged as a critical consideration. the research highlighted the complexity of post-whitening tooth sensitivity and the importance of a personalized approach to prevention and treatment. Strategies such as detailed patient history-taking, the use of desensitizing gels, and lower concentrations of hydrogen peroxide were found to be effective in reducing sensitivity. Adequate management of gingival inflammation was also emphasized. The conclusion underscores the ongoing need for research to improve clinical protocols and enhance the patient experience.
