Diseases related to pathogenic bacteria remain a significant threat to the human body. Among the main pathogenic bacteria that cause hospital infections, we find Klebsiella pneumoniae (KP), which is a Gram-negative bacillus belonging to the oral microbiota, routinely isolated in immunocompromised, hospitalized individuals with a underlying disease. Based on this, the aim of the work was to carry out a literature review on the general aspects, virulence and drug resistance of Klebsiella pneumoniae. KP can be categorized into classical KP (cKP) and hypervirulent KP (hvKP) according to its phenotypic and genotypic characteristics, the latter has greater virulence and can cause serious infectious diseases. Patients with K. pneumoniae infections have a tendency to metastatic dissemination to distant sites. The presentations of hvKP are diverse and distinct from infections caused by cKP. hvKP causes community-acquired invasive infections characterized by liver abscesses and metastatic infections of the lung, eyes, central nervous system, musculoskeletal system, and urinary tract. Antibacterials from the cephalosporin and carbapenem classes have been the mainstay of treatment for serious infections caused by KP, but their effectiveness has been compromised by the widespread acquisition of genes encoding enzymes such as extended-spectrum lactamases and carbapenemases. In view of this, it is extremely important to carry out studies addressing the current panorama of infections caused by KP and the mechanisms associated with the increase in its virulence and resistance to antimicrobials, bringing advantageous contributions and stimulating research into new pharmaceutical forms of antimicrobials.
