Corticosteroid therapy in the treatment of eosinophilic esophagitis: a systematic review

Abstract

Absract: Objective: To verify, through a systematic review, the effect of corticosteroid therapy in patients with eosinofolic esophagitis. Methods: Studies originally published in the English language, until September 2023, using the databases MEDLINE and the Cochrane Library as references. When selecting studies with the greatest scientific evidence, we only considered randomized controlled clinical trials (RCTs). Inclusion criteria: complete studies on corticosteroid therapy in patients with EoE, randomized controlled clinical trials (RCT), publication age less than ten years; Exclusion criteria: publications of abstracts and conference proceedings, duplicate articles. Results: 48 studies involving Corticotherapy and EoE were identified in the different databases, totaling 17 articles that met the inclusion criteria and were used. The studies analyzed involved 1,877 patients between 2 and 75 years old, the majority of whom were male. The majority of clinical trials presented results consistent with corticosteroid therapy with BOS in medium and high doses, also observing that after 6 weeks, 58% of patients who received BOT were in complete remission and after 12 weeks, 85% of patients achieved remission. Conclusion: This review affirms the benefits of RCEE in the therapeutic approach to corticosteroid therapy in patients with EoE. Analyzing the similarity of the results observed was important to carry out a good clinical analysis associated with a fundamental histopathological analysis to establish the diagnosis. Since the use of budesonide is the main treatment choice responsible for the favorable results in the cure of patients with EoE.
