Abstract

Metabolic Syndrome (MS) stands out for presenting a set of associated diseases, among which we can mention hypertension, obesity and changes in glucose levels that consequently lead to insulin resistance. Other factors that can activate and even aggravate the MS framework, such as physical inactivity, socioeconomic characteristics and education. In addition, the elderly population, especially females, are the least affected by this disease, however, studies that address more about the MS theme in the elderly is still not enough to better understand how this is related and what is the course of disease in this population. The aim of this work is to carry out a systematic review of MS in elderly Brazilians. This work was developed according to the PRISMA methodology, using the following research terms “Metabolic Syndrome, Elderly and Brazil”. MS presented more prevalence in association of females, aged between 60 and 83 years with the presence of at least one sign and symptom of MS. It was proven that physical inactivity favors the development of the syndrome, as well as socioeconomic conditions and educational levels. Thus, although MS affects many other ages, and is a much talked about topic, there are still few articles that talk about MS in the elderly in Brazil. Note the need for more studies so that it is possible to assess with more quality the development of the syndrome in the elderly population in Brazil.
