Fibromyalgia is a chronic painful rheumatic syndrome characterized by the presence of diffuse musculoskeletal pain or specific tension points. This study aims to verify in patients with fibromyalgia, whether acupuncture therapy associated with pharmacotherapy is effective in reducing pain. For this, a systematic review was carried out, through a bibliographic search in the Virtual Health Library, EBSCO host and World Wide Science databases using the Health Descriptors fibromyalgia AND acupuncture AND pharmacotherapy AND pain. The research question was formulated using the PIE variation. The selected studies had their level of evidence assessed by the Grades of Recommendation, Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE System). The outcome showed that patients with fibromyalgia undergoing acupuncture therapy, according to the patterns of Traditional Chinese Medicine, obtained pain reduction, registered by the Visual Analog Scale, and improved quality of life; when compared to control groups that did not undergo this therapeutic modality. Thus, despite the small number of selected studies, the evidence found was satisfactory to demonstrate that acupuncture was shown to be effective in reducing pain in patients with fibromyalgia.
