Abstract

Prematurity is a significant occurrence in the global medical landscape, with children born before 37 weeks of gestation facing distinct challenges in relation to their growth and functional development. The evaluation and monitoring of these children have been topics of increasing interest, given their relevance to the long-term health and well-being of these individuals. This literature review aims to understand the practices and outcomes associated with growth assessment and functional monitoring of preterm children. In addition, it seeks to identify changes and advances in practices over time, as well as the results associated with different intervention approaches. A systematic review of the literature was performed in databases such as PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science, prioritizing articles from the last ten years. The analysis focused on growth assessment methods, functional follow-up techniques and developments in practices over time. Studies show advances in the evaluation practices of preterm children, with new tools and multidisciplinary approaches improving accuracy and monitoring. Personalized early interventions improve growth and development outcomes. Corrected age is crucial in the assessment, and ongoing training is essential for the professionals who care for these children. This literature review provides valuable insights into the trajectory and outcomes associated with growth assessment and functional follow-up in preterm children, emphasizing the importance of informed and updated practices in the field of neonatology and pediatrics.
