Quality of life and longevity: the risk of chronic diseases in adulthood caused by obesity in adolescence

Abstract

Obesity in adolescence is growing globally and is associated with several chronic diseases in adulthood, such as diabetes, hypertension and cardiovascular diseases. This chapter reviews the literature on how juvenile obesity affects quality of life and longevity, addressing metabolic and hormonal changes, as well as psychological implications such as low self-esteem and depression. Using the VHL platform and databases such as LILACS and PUBMED, studies from 2018 to 2023 that examine the consequences of obesity in adolescence were selected. The results indicate that juvenile obesity contributes significantly to the reduction of quality of life and the increase in the risk of chronic diseases, highlighting the urgent need for early interventions and public policies aimed at the prevention and treatment of obesity. These findings are crucial for the development of effective public health strategies. Importantly, the responsibility for tackling adolescent obesity lies not only with the individuals affected, but also with health systems, governments, and communities. Investments in public policies aimed at promoting healthy environments, as well as awareness campaigns, are essential to address this growing challenge and ensure a healthier and longer life for future generations.
