This study aims to report an experience of health education strategies, addressing sexuality, prevention of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and empowerment of the adolescent body in schools in the city of Boa Vista, Roraima. Playful and interactive workshops were used, in addition to cross-sectional conversation circles to address the following topics: teenage pregnancy; puberty; gender issues; STIs; sexuality; social stereotypes; chauvinism; heteronormativity and homophobia. First, a workshop was held with the aim of disseminating knowledge for the prevention of STIs and early pregnancy. It was noted that even with the success in the dissemination of bioscientific concepts, the sociocultural barrier prevails. Therefore, the need for interventions with preventive content is reaffirmed, however, it is understood that they are insufficient to achieve full health education, the breaking of myths and the necessary contribution by school environments in child sexual development. In the second workshop, the focus was on debating the concepts of sexual plurality and gender identity. In this, it was noticed that despite the existence of previous knowledge about sexuality, school students persisted in believing in a heteronormative sexuality and, for the most part, rejected the existence of other gender identities. That is, sociocultural barriers are again more important for dealing with homophobia and transphobia than the lack of key concepts about sexuality. Finally, it can be said that these interventions strengthen the professional training of medical students, while expanding the discussion about sexuality in the school environment, being an important step in debating sex education and its methodologies.
