Natural products have been used by humanity since ancient times. Their ethnopharmacological properties were and are used as a source of medicines, because they have bioactive compounds that can be extracted by various processes. Several drugs are currently being marketed that were inspired by natural products. The use of technologies, the development of research, studies in combinatorial chemistry, and synthesis, allow the production of many compounds. It is believed that, prior to technological development, the search for cure and analgesia introduced the application of herbs, leaves, and plants for therapeutic purposes. And, in this scenario, it was possible to highlight aromatic plants as excellent sources of natural products, since there is a wide variety of plants known and exploited for their essential oil content with applications in medical microbiology, clinical, pharmaceutical botany, production of fragrances and flavorings. In particular, searching about the essential oils (EOs) of oregano and thyme it was observed that they present as main compounds the terpenes - monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes. Of these, being carvacrol and thymol the most present compounds. It was observed a correlation of these EOs with antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant activities, and these properties are attributed to the presence of a hydrophobic end in their composition. Therefore, the essential oils of oregano and thyme are plant-derived bioactive substances with potential for pharmacological therapeutic applications.
