Abstract

Corn (Zea mays L.) is one of the most produced cereals in Brazil. Sitophilus zeamais Motschulsky (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) popularly known as maize weevil is one of the main grain pests stored in corn. Studies have been performed due to the need for alternatives to the use of chemical controls, like the use of essential oils, diatomaceous earths and plant extracts. Pirolenous extract (EPL) which is obtained from smoke condensation during carbonization of wood has presented an alternative with insecticidal properties. Given the above, the aim of this work was to evaluate the repellent activity of different concentrations of bamboo PLA, Bambusa vulgaris and its fumigant action on S. zeamais. Repellency tests were made in arenas composed of two plastic containers interconnected to a central box by means of two plastic tubes. In one of the boxes were placed 20 g of untreated corn grains (control) and in the other the same amount of grain impregnated with different treatments. Sixteen non-sexed S. zeamais adults (0-15 days old) were released in the central box. At tested concentrations of 4, 6, 8, 10, 20, 40, 50,100 e 150µL / 20 g of cv Catingueiro corn grains, it was observed that repellency occurred from concentration of 10 µL. The fumigation chambers were made in 2.5 L glass containers where 20 non-sexed S. zeamais adults (0 - 15 days old) and 40 g of maize were confined. In the fumigation tests at doses of 4, 6, 8, 10, 20, 40, 50, 100 and 150 µL, no adult pest mortality was observed. Bamboo EPL, at the tested concentrations, presents potentiality for repel maize weevil since it was efficent in lower concentrations.
